Volkswagen . How to Replace a Floor Pan in a VW BugVolkswagen Beetles tend to run forever, so rusted-out floor pans are not uncommon. They are a little complicated to replace, but this type of job can be accomplished by anyone with the right tools and a basic understanding of auto body repair. Replacing a floor pan in a VW Bug is an inexpensive repair that comes with a lot of job-well-done satisfaction. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Floor pan Sawzall Hammer and chisel or chisel-tip muffler cutter Wrench set Drill Spot welding equipment Sealant Undercoating spray Rust preventive spray Step by Step : 1 Remove the seats and floor carpet, then the heater tubes, battery and rear seat support to get to the edges of the floor pans. If you're working on the driver's side floor pan, disconnect the clutch cable and remove the pedal cluster. 2 Use a Sawzall to cut the floor pan away around the edges, working from inside the car and staying about ¼ inch to ½ inch in from the lip that runs along the edge of the tunnel and supports. When you get to the heater channel, you'll need to cut from under the car, just for the last inch or two. Cut the last of the pan away from under the car, carefully avoiding the heater channel. 3 Remove the pan bolts from the heater channel, and the floor pan should drop out. 4 Chisel away any remaining edges of the floor pan with a chisel-tip muffler cutter or a hammer and a chisel, and grind the lip edges smooth. 5 Prepare the new pan by drilling out the spot welds that hold the rear chassis supports attached to the new floor pan. Use the originals instead; they will be sturdier. Since you're replacing the pan with the body still on, you'll need to use the Sawzall to trim out a rectangular piece from each outer corner of the new pan where the body attaches to the frame. 6 Bend up about 1 inch along the front edge of the floor pan. This will allow you to slide the pan onto the lip from under the car. Once the pan is in place, bend it back down. 7 Replace the gasket around the edges of the new floor pan, and bolt it loosely into place. Once the bolts are lined up and you're sure it's a good fit, tighten the bolts. 8 Weld the edges using either plug or a stitch weld, and then use a seam sealant all the way around. 9 Spray the pan with undercoat on the bottom and a rust preventive on the inside. Tips & Warnings Always use protective eyewear when working with power tools.
Volkswagen . How to Replace a Transmission in a Grand PrixThe transmission on a Pontiac Grand Prix is technically called a transaxle, though the usage of the word "transmission" is common. The transaxle combines the differential gears with the transmission in one housing, instead of two separate housings (as is done with rear-drive vehicles). The transmission in a Grand Prix is an automatic transmission and should be trouble-free for the life of the car. However, on rare occasions, gear teeth do chip or wear down to a point where the transmission will not shift properly. When this happens, it's best to replace the transmission. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Safety glasses and mechanic's gloves New transmission 2 floor jacks with 4 jack stands Socket wrench with socket set Flat block of wood about 1' x 2' Oil catch pan Clean rags Masking tape Marker Pliers Tire wrench Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the cables running to the positive and negative battery terminals by loosening the nut on the cable clamps and sliding the clamps off the battery terminals. 2 Remove the nuts holding the battery tie down in place. Then remove the battery from the engine and battery tray underneath the battery. 3 Remove the bolts holding the air intake system in place. Remove the hose clamp connecting the intake to the throttle body. Mark and remove all electrical connections to the intake assembly using masking tape and a marker. 4 Remove the four bolts that hold the power distributor to the engine block on the left side of the engine. Mark the location and orientation of the spark plug wires with masking tape and marker. Pull the wires off of the distributor and remove the distributor. 5 Mark all hoses running to the transmission with masking tape and marker and disconnect all of the hoses. 6 Mark all of the electrical wiring running to the transmission with masking tape and marker. Then remove all of the electrical wires. 7 Detach the power and ground leads running to the starter motor and remove the upper mounting bolt from the starter motor. 8 Pull the cooler hoses running to the transmission and plug the hoses with a clean rag to prevent fluid leaks. 9 Push down on the tensioner for the throttle valve and remove the pin on the end of the throttle cable from the cable pin guide by sliding it out of the cable pin guide. Then, slide the throttle cable out of the cable guide. Step by Step : 10 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts with a tire wrench by giving them a quarter turn counterclockwise with a tire wrench. Step by Step : 11 Raise the Grand Prix onto jack stands by lifting up on the front jack point with a floor jack. The front jack point is located behind the radiator. Step by Step : 12 Continue to remove the lug nuts and pull the wheels off the wheel hub. Step by Step : 13 Remove the engine splash pan and inner fender lining that is secured by plastic rivets. Prying the rivets up with a flat head screwdriver. Step by Step : 14 Place a catch pan under the Grand Prix's transmission and remove the drain bolt by turning it counterclockwise with a socket wrench. Drain all of the oil into the catch pan. Step by Step : 15 Remove the exhaust pipe bracket and cable holder from the torque converter cover. Step by Step : 16 Remove the bolts that hold the torque converter cover in place and then remove the torque converter cover. Step by Step : 17 Disconnect the shift cable from the transmission by removing the pin holding the cable in place. Step by Step : 18 Mark the relationship of the torque converter to the driveplate with masking tape and a marker. When you reinstall this component, you'll need to have the orientation correct. Step by Step : 19 Remove the bolts holding the torque converter to the driveplate. 20 Remove the nut holding the radius rod to the front crossmember. 21 Remove the bolts holding the steering knuckle and lower control arm together. Swing the hub assembly out of the way while you pry the axle from the transmission with a screwdriver. Do not damage the seal on the transmission housing while you are doing this. 22 Place a block of wood under the oil pan and support the engine at the oil pan with a jack. Support the transmission with a separate jack. 23 Raise the jack on the transmission just enough to take the stress off the mounting bolts. Remove the bolts securing the transaxle to the engine. 24 Lower the transmission slowly while you pull the transmission off the engine 25 Install the new transmission. Installation is the reverse of removal. Store used coolant safely until disposal. Pour the used coolant into a container with a screw-on cap, label the container as "coolant" or "antifreeze," and place it well out of the reach of kids and pets until you can dispose of it, following the instructions in Step 6. Don't use containers that formerly contained beverages. They are too easily mistaken, and the sweet taste of the coolant can compound the error. 6. Dispose of used coolant safely. The most environmentally safe method is to take the coolant to a recycling center that handles toxic waste or bring it to a place that specifically recycles used coolant. Some auto supply stores accept used coolant as a public service. Call the major stores in your area to see whether they do so. If not, try a service station. They can either run the coolant through their recycling machine or include it in the batch they send out for safe disposal. 691

The EPA warns that antifreeze can overwhelm the organisms in your septic system, damaging the system, and suggests that if your wastewater goes into a septic tank, you should dispose of antifreeze in a sanitary sewer system. The organization cautions, "Do not pour antifreeze into storm sewer openings, sinkholes, or abandoned wells." EH If your engine boils over, be sure to clean up the spill wherever you are. Wild animals are just as vulnerable to being poisoned by coolant as domestic pets are. Finding Leaks in the Cooling System In addition to keeping the water and coolant level where it needs to be, you can prevent trouble by keeping an eye out for leaks and replacing old or damaged hoses. Figure 14-4 shows the common trouble spots in the cooling system — the places where you should check for coolant leaks. The following sections give you a few pointers on what types of coolant leaks to look for, and the section "Repairing Leaks in the Cooling System" tells you what to do if you find them. GMC Canyon Extended Cab. * Look under your vehicle in the morning to see whether any liquid is on the ground under it. If you see liquid, stick your finger in it and smell it. If it's coolant (green, red, blue, orange, or rust colored), look around the parts of the car that are over the puddle and feel around for wetness. If you're not sure what the stuff that's leaking out of your vehicle is, see Chapter 20 for an easy way to locate, troubleshoot, and deal with leaks of all types, including oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. '>art'"" ^eeP'n9 ^our ^ar m Good Condition, System by System Check the radiator Look around your radiator for whitish deposits or rust-colored stains. These indicate old leaks that have dried. They may not be all that old; water tends to evaporate quickly on a hot radiator. If you find any, the "Radiator leaks" section later in this chapter tells you what to do. Also check the front end of the radiator to see whether the surface is befouled with dirt, leaves, and bugs. If so, remove them with a brush and a garden hose. ^ —-^ If your radiator catches a lot of debris, you can attach a piece of nylon window screen over the front surface with twist-ties to trap the stuff and keep it from getting stuck between the radiator fins. If you aren't sure, ask a mechanic to pressure-test your cap to see whether it's functioning properly. If you need a new one, give the salesperson the make, model, and year of your vehicle and check the pressure limits (psi) on the new cap against your owner's manual to make sure that you're buying the proper cap for the amount of pressure in your cooling system. Never let a service station you don't normally frequent hook you into buying a new radiator cap unless you make them pressure-test your old cap. You may want to have them test the new cap, as well. I've been sold a faulty new cap to replace a faulty old one! Check the hoses Regularly check all the hoses under the hood of your vehicle, whether or not you've been having trouble. For instant panic, there's nothing like having a hose burst while you're driving. If it's a radiator hose, the resulting shower of steam is frightening at best and dangerous at worst. If a vacuum hose goes, the sudden loss of vacuum can stop your car in the midst of traffic. Checking your hoses and replacing the funky ones before they leak can save your nerves and your pocketbook in the long run. If you find a hose that's soft and squishy, bulgy, hard or brittle, cracked, leaking, or marked with a whitish deposit where stuff has leaked and dried, replace it immediately, before it breaks. I show you how to do that in the section "Leaky hoses" later in this chapter. .
